Open Airgun Championships at Bisley. (NSRA report)

The highlight of the 2008 British Open Air Pistol Championships, held today, was Georgina Geikie smashing a 16-year-old British Record. For the Senior Women's Championship she had a Qualification score of 386, only one point under the record set by Julia Lydall. She then scored a very steady series of 10s and 9s to complete the 10-shot final with 99.6 and an overall score of 485.6. This was 1.2 points higher than the former record of 484.4, set by Carol Page at the Munich Airgun Meeting in 1992. Julia Lydall finished second with a score of 468.9 and Miss Minerva S Singh of Oxford University finished a close third with a score of 466.5.

In the Senior Men's event Mick Gault OBE cruised to his eighth consecutive win, inflicting a crushing defeat on the rest of the field, his margin of victory being 17.5 points.

The two Junior Championships turned out to be the most closely contested of the five Open Championships decided today. In the Junior Women's competition Geraldine Buckley regained the Championship she last won in 2006, beating Hannah Polak by 3.3 points, having started the final only two points in the lead.

The Junior Men's Championship went to Glen Eldershaw for the third year running, with an advantage of 2.7 points over S Andrews.

The Championship for Shooters with Disabilities might well have turned out to be another close contest, but Chris Summerscales, who was seeking his third consecutive win suffered a trigger failure in the later stages of the Qualification stage. This left the way open for A Bunclark to take the Championship for the first time.

At the end of the finals, the trophies and medals were presented by John Leighton-Dyson, Performance Director of British Shooting.
