Full-bore Shooters note:-
24th Long Range Inter-Counties Match Held at Bisley Sunday 16th October 2011
>
Jeremy Hooper writes:-After the early morning mist cleared, 5 County teams commenced shooting by 09.30hrs in what turned out to be a beautiful sunny and clear autumn day with minimal wind to worry the coaches.
By the end of the morning 900yd detail, Sussex was one bull ahead of Hertfordshire with 585.40v to 584.68v. Sussex's Tim Brooking shooting 75.12v.
After lunch the weather continued as the morning. All teams were at one point shooting over a herd of approximately 20 deer who had decided to wonder over Stickledown and settle beyond the 800 yd point. A standoff between two stags provided entertainment for team members not shooting.
By the end of the competition, Hertfordshire had overtaken Sussex to win the match comfortably.
Gloucestershire had entered a team with some junior cadets who all put in some good performances using some standard issue ammunition.

ORA Wright Cup and Long Range Pairs Meeting 25th June 2011 Held at Otmoor >
John Winter writes:-The match was shot at Otmoor at 200 yds using 0.22 rimfire rifles. It was a cloudy day with a strong blustering wind requiring up to seven minutes correction. This added up to a total deflection of fourteen inches ! Scores were lower than other years and the number of "V" Bulls much reduced. Harwell"A" produced a match winning score by virtue of consistent shooting in the strong wind.
As always the usual cry from the FB Committee is why don't other SB Clubs enter and have a go at 200 yd shooting. The 22 rifle is very accurate at that range as can be seen by the large number of V Bulls shot. But as usual there was a deafening silence from the rest of the County's SB Clubs. What a shame !

The ORA Long Range Inter-County Match, held at Bisley on Sunday the 17th October.>
This, the 23rd match, was shot at Bisley on a clear sunny day with light winds. As is often the case with light wind, it was variable in strength and direction and was hard to read because it only lifted the wind-flags slightly so the coaches had to work hard, especially in the afternoon at 1000 yards. Scoring was close, there being only 9 points between the first three teams. Oxfordshire led Hereford and Worcester by 6 points and Sussex were only 3 points behind Hereford and Worcester. Highest possible team score was 1200 and all "v"s.Ian Shepherd
The ORA Historic Rifle Autumn Meeting 2010, held at Otmoor on Saturday the 25th September.>
Report from John WinterThe match was shot at Otmoor on a lovely sunny, but chilly Autumn day. There was a poor entry of 24 with 22 shooting in the match, which ensured that we made a loss of about £140 on the day. We still have to shoot into the Hythe Frames which makes more work setting up and also increases the safety angle. My thanks to the usual few who helped me to set up and take down targets. It is surprising that these always seem to be the same people !
There were some excellent scores recorded and lots of different rifles on view. Well done to Olie Bosley for his first 100 and to Graham Saunders for an excellent 96 in the Service Rifle Class. A good contest between Nic Washington and Jason Buckingham with their ML BP Rifles. The Lee Enfield No 4 still proves what a very good rifle it was, a clear favourite of many present.
My grateful thanks to Cliff Warwick and Nic Washington for doing all the RCO duties and thus allowing me to shoot. A big "Well done" to the Harwell Club for an entry of ten shooters.

Invitation Long-Range Inter-Counties Match 2009,
4th October 2009 at Stickledown Ranges
This was the 22nd Annual Meeting, organised by Ian Shepherd on behalf of
the Oxfordshire Rifle Association.
It was different in the afternoon. We were greeted by a fairly strong gusty wind which swung around rather wildly and the coaches were challenged. Even so, I don't think that they were to blame for all the wild shots! That wind was enough to blow your rifle about if you didn't have a really firm hold. At least we had a dry day with a reasonable amount of sunshine.
The winners were Hertfordshire, Captain APW Daw, with an aggregate of 1111.94. Oxfordshire were second with 1096.70 and Hereford and Worcester came third with 1090.88 To download a copy of the Ian's full report and the results click here.
The ORA Historic & Classic Rifle Autumn Meeting 2009,
26th September at Otmoor
The match was shot at Otmoor on a
lovely sunny Autumn day. There was a very good entry of 32 with 23 shooting in the match, which ensured that we made a profit of
about £50 on the day. We still have to shoot into the Hythe Frames which makes more work setting up and also increases
the safety angle. My thanks to the usual few who helped me to set up and take down targets. It is surprising that
these always seem to be the same people !
It was a first for several members and they certainly
enjoyed the experience. There were some excellent scores recorded and lots of different rifles on view.
The Lee Enfield No 4 still proves what a very good rifle it was, a clear favourite of many present.
My grateful thanks to Terry Woodley for sharing the
RCO duties with me and thus allowing me to shoot.
