MOD Competency Certificates

The NSRA have finally made a statement on the requirement for Competency Certificates
which have been demanded of shooters using MOD Ranges. The text of the message,
which can be seen in the origional here, is:-

Joint Press Release dated 2nd September 2008

A recent review by the MoD of the safe use of their Ranges highlighted the fact that they had formal auditable systems in place to manage the risk arising from their own activity while affiliated civilian clubs shooting under the auspices of their National Bodies did not.

The review concluded that any risk to the MoD lay in the use of full bore firearms fired by civilians on MoD ranges. The National Governing Body, the NRA, had only limited knowledge and control over the activities conducted in their name by Clubs affiliated to them.       As a result the NRA were required by the MoD to formalise arrangements with their affiliated clubs and to require the Chairmen of those clubs to accept responsibility for their members' safe use of firearms when shooting on MoD Ranges. It was further required that any such system should be auditable both by the NRA and the MoD. Such a system is now in place.
The use of MoD ranges by clubs affiliated to the NSRA and firing only NSRA-approved .22 rimfire ammunition in single shot practices governed by the NSRA was not considered to pose the same risk, and the existing controls were considered to be adequate. The 'Safe and Competent' certification system adopted by the NRA does not therefore currently apply to NSRA members except where self-loading firearms are used on an MoD range in which case certification will be required.

If any club has a problem with their local Range Warden please contact us (Geoff Doe 01483 485517 or email) and we will take the matter up on your behalf.

Two Oxford Shooters take medals at the British Airgun Championships at Bisley.

Dan Rivers (Wantage) became the 2008 British Junior Men's Open Champion at the British Open Airgun Championships held at Bisley 22nd to 24the February. In a magnificent shoot, he won by a margin of 7 points with a score of 668.4. The win was all the more remarkable because Dan, having a National Classification of D, elected to shoot in a higher class because of his improvement over the last 12 months. He wound up in A class, where he finished 6th in the Aggregate. He was also elected "Sportsman of the Meeting"
In the Women's Open Championships, Miss M S Singh (Oxford University) finished third, just missing out on the silver by a couple of points (466.5) but the competition was very tough, the winner Miss G S Geikie of Okehampton taking Gold with a New British Record shoot of 485.6.
Oxfordshire's contribution to the meeting was underlined by the prizes being presented on the final day by our own ORA President, Hugo Brunner.
